Resulta que hay un error en PySide con la clase QSpacerItem. Al comentar las instancias de QSpacerItem en el código anterior, funciona perfectamente. Hay un informe de error en el PySide bugzilla.

En primer lugar está utilizando PySide (Nokia) no PyQt4 (Riverbank Computing), aunque sus API son casi idénticas, no son el mismo proyecto. Los ejemplos PySide están disponibles aquí: git clone: ​​//gitorious.org/pyside/pyside-examples.git

Creo que el problema puede tener que ver con su llamada de

super(MyMainWindow, self).__init__(parent) 

tratar

QtGui.QMainWindow.__init__(self, parent) 

en su lugar.

Sé que parece que es lo mismo, pero me he encontrado con problemas similares con Super usando PyQt4, y por lo que puedo decir, PySide de Nokia tiene los mismos problemas. Tiene algo que ver con el clima, Python posee el padre o es propiedad de un objeto C++ subyacente. ¡Al menos inténtalo, te llevará menos de 5 segundos!
